A long time ago, I spent Christmas thinking of the ghosts in Charles Dickens’ . I looked forward to it while watching which was set in Macy’s in New York. Later as Tim Burton’s and was released, Christmas became a day for people to enjoy it unrelated to religion.
In English, the word originated from “chris” and “mass.” the “X” in X-mas is derived from the Greek word christo (xpiσtoσ). Baby Jesus wasn’t born on December 25. Legend has it that it changed with the times and Christmas became December 25 in Rome 336 years ago.
After the 19th century, as the British Empire’s power was at its height, Christmas was revived and became about neighborly love, charity, and religion. The Christmas tree became popular when Lord Albert adopted the German custom to the Windsor castle family’s Christmas.
You have to mention Santa Claus when you talk about Christmas. With the firm principle that he won’t give presents to crying children, Santa Claus is derived from Saint Nicholas, the guardian saint of children. The name Santa Claus began from the Dutch nickname for Saint Nicholas, “Sinter Klaas,” and settlers from the Netherlands to the new world spread their tradition which became the English pronunciation.
The image of Santa Clause riding a sled pulled by reindeer from his home in the North Pole to give children gifts came from the real philanthropic activities of Saint Nicholas in the regions of turkey. And the current image of a fat old man in a red costume comes from Haddon Sundblom’s portrayal in a 1931 Coca Cola commercial.
Santa Clause’s existence may not have a religious background, but to people he brings excitement and gifts on Christmas. This year, let’s send cards to the people around us we have forgotten. A card with a short, heartfelt greeting could be a huge gift that can inspire a miracle.
