The costumes and Korean-style hats of the movie “Kingdom” have received worldwide attention. Now, the perfect ratio of Hanbok starts to move people’s hearts.
Let me introduce a really beautiful book. It is a book called “Old Korea” by Elizabeth Keith. When you look at this book, you will be surprised thinking, ‘Are these really pictures drawn in the Joseon Dynasty?’
Elizabeth Keith is a British painter born in Scotland in 1887. Recognizing the beauty of Korea and the beauty of Hanbok earlier, she left a beautiful picture book that even Koreans did not leave behind. Elizabeth Keith was born as the youngest daughter of a wealthy family and studied painting on her own. In 1915, when she turned 28, she traveled to Japan with her older sister. Living there for five years, she learned Japanese prints. In 1919, Elizabeth Keith went on a trip to Korea that she had never been to before returning to England. It is said that Elizabeth Keith thought of Joseon very negatively immediately after the March 1 Movement. However, she could not but love the Joseon Dynasty. Falling in love with simplicity, talent, and love of Koreans, Elizabeth Keith decided to draw Joseon.
Her paintings while she was staying in Seoul are “Old Korea” by Elizabeth Keith and the paintings in it are not the desolate Joseon dynasty just after March 1 Movement. They show the images of women and children in beautiful and warm Hanbok seen by her. No material could really be more beautiful than this.
Hanbok has recently attracted worldwide attention. Koreans are called “People of White Clothes” but we had a lot of various colorful clothes made with silk and see-through Hanbok fabrics. Through the movie “Kingdom,” many people started to be interested in Korean ‘hats’.
K-pop bands ‘Black Pink’ and Oh My Girl created the sensation of Hanbok among fans around the world through a music video titled “How you like that,” and “Nonstop” at the Golden Disc Awards, respectively. In addition, a traditional Korean Hanbok became a global hot topic when US Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland with her Korean name ‘Sun-ja’ was sworn in to Congress in it. As such, Hanbok has received international attention and favorable reviews for its beauty and authenticity.
The popularity of “Mr. Sunshine” sparked a craze for hanbok even in Korea. Accordingly, the exhibition of “Western Fairy Tales in Hanbok,” which was held as an invitation to the Seoul National University Central Library, was also held in “Sunshine Studio” in Nonsan which is famous for the filming of ‘Mr. Sunshine’.
The ‘Korea in Fashion,’ an online project, which recently implemented the beauty of hanbok as applied design by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, showed the possibility of highlighting hanbok as classy global fashion. In addition, the new Korean wave ‘K Heritage’ is to make foreigners get fascinated at and experience the true nature of Korean traditional culture online and offline. This is expected to lead foreigners to recognize the excellence of the Korean traditional culture and play an important role in the increase of national brand power by imprinting Korea as a civilized country with culture for thousands of years.
K-Paper has also released cards with children and women wearing various hanbok, and plans to introduce more various cards in the future. K-Paper will absolutely support K-Heritage and show the beauty of Korea.
