MOUTAN PEONY

Moutan peony is a flower that is frequently featured in Korean art pieces. There are 3 layers of leaves that grow to 2 meters. It is both splendid and humble, large and desirable, and shy and intellectual. A Summergreen shrub in the buttercup family, it is called “ran” due to its red flowers. It produces seeds but it sprouts from its roots so it has “mo” in the word. It is used as medicine and the roots can treat fevers, aches, spasms, and blood circulation. It is also perfect for women both visually and medically because of its effects on osteoporosis and menstruation.

Paeonia suffruticosa (originally Paeonia Moutan Sims) by Abraham Jacobus Wendel, 1868

A symbol of the rich, it was placed on ceremonial robes of grooms and the flower patterns were used on clothes of women such as the queen or princesses.
It is said that along with roses, the moutan peony is the best work of art by humanity. It was also called “hwajungwang,” the most splendid name among flowers. 1)
